This week I've been mostly working on grammar and sentence structure. It has become more difficult as I learn the sentence structure. My greetings have become second nature and I sometimes forget English greetings.
I have worked on my apps as often as my worksheets. Like I said, greetings are easy compared to just simple conversation which has a lot of variable which is hard for me to keep track of. I am slowly getting better and talking with my friend CeeJ on the phone has helped because actually conversing with some one in the language helps me gain confidence. I am able to understand more of the lyrics in Kpop songs. Burning Up or Fire by BTS is my favorite Kpop song and was the first song I learned in Korean. I want to be able to converse with my friend CeeJ and I want to go to Korea for my senior trip. I tried upload a video of introductions and greetings. I didn't have any problems with studying, but I could not upload my video so that's sad:( As I come to a conclusion for this project, I would still like to continue learning Korean. My next goal for my learning voyage is to learn more formal Terms.

For this blog post I would like to discuss some of the progress I have made by doing worksheets that I have found for free online. As previously discussed some of the pay-gated content was causing my continued learning to be hampered. I found that doing practice worksheets while continuing to listen to the podcast and practice out loud was the key to my continued successful learning of the language. The worksheets that I found were by Professor Oh below is an example of the worksheets. I found these worksheets quite useful when learning the language because they focused on common combinations of consonants and vowels. I did several and after the practice and repetition that I continue to do daily. I was able to achieve a greater mastery of pronunciation. I intend to continue to supplement my podcasts with her worksheets. there are many that are available free online. Some of the challenges that I have faced this time were: Finding the last two worksheets to help my current understanding of the language in particular the one below on double consonants. Overall I think my progress is moving alone nicely. I am still hopeful that I will not have to pay for additional content. I am not sure what I could further add to supplement my study of Korean online. I would consider using a book but pronunciation I believe is the key to mastering this language. Perhaps, further investigation into Youtube to find more sources of practice might help. During this week of practice I mostly focused on pronunciation using Hanguel 101 I feel that this app is far superior to some of the others that I found initially. I find myself using it more often. Duolingo has not been as useful because it is just assigning sounds to smaller words instead of teaching you how the actual speakers of the language speak. I also found myself using the koreanclass101 website to supplement my lessons. I still tried to focus on daily practice and repetition and listening to podcast lessons. I found a YouTube channel that has also assisted in my Korean practice https://www.youtube.com/user/talktomeinkorean. Talktomeinkorean, the Youtube site, is useful because it teaches the difference between certain words because they can sound similar.
Some of the challenges I faced during this week of progress were the Hanguel 101 layout and having to purchase premium if I wanted to further learn stuff in the language. I overcame this challenge after I got to this point by using Youtube and Duolingo more often. To further improve and practice may require paying for content which I really do not want to do. I have also been completing online Korean practice exercises. This may help avoid having unnecessary additional costs. I believe that languages should be accessible to everyone who is willing to learn. I included some of the vocab words that I have picked up so far related to meals and food. For my genius project assignment I chose to learn Korean. My initial progress was done via phone apps that I downloaded for free from the app store. I also chose to look up any additional online resources to streamline learning the spoken language. The free programs that I downloaded to learn off of had pronunciation assistance.
Some of the programs that I used off of the app store were: 1) Hangeul 2) Innovative 3) Duolingo 4) 24 Hour Korean 5) Annyeong I also used the website: https://www.koreanclass101.com/ The app store program that I found most useful was Hangeul 101. This program was useful because it goes into more detail about pronunciation. It also has an all spoken podcast teaching curriculum. Some of the initial lessons and progress I made were: 1)Assigning specific sounds to specific written characters in the language. 2) Learning basic conversational Korean while working on writing the characters correctly. I did this by writing the characters and saying the words while I was writing them. 3) I used repetition and daily practice to learn initial lessons some Korean words that I learned were Introductions and Manners, and basic questions such as how are you doing. Challenges I faced: Some of the challenges I faced when starting were pronouncing r/l and sometimes understanding what the people were saying because I felt the lesson was moving a bit fast. I would say my initial progress into a new language is progressing as expected. I believe that new languages are probably quite difficult to master. To improve I will try to repeat the lessons more and follow along with the podcast more closely if I am able to do so. |
